This is by no means an exhaustive list, yet. In fact, some sections are downright skimpy. If you can fill in gaps (other than specific corpse messages), please let me know. Level Messages These are messages you get when entering a level for the first time that indicate either a unique level, or that something interesting has been created on that level. You feel excited. Somewhere on this level is a large monster nest (a room full of critters, frequently harder than level, usually with a trapped door so they can get out and swarm you). You feel really excited. About half the level is a really scary monster vault, usually filled with Emperor liches. It also probably contains at least a couple of artifacts. I've lost powerful game winners to this level (after winning). You feel an intense tension. This will only happen once, and only fairly deep in the Caverns of Chaos. The battle bunny level. You feel a surge of power. An artifact is lying around somewhere on the level (but probably not unguarded). This no longer occurs in the infiinite dungeon. You shudder. This one is fairly rare. There is a special trap room on the level (this is a room in which much (more than half) of the floor is trapped--not a good place to hang out unless you've found them all and just love being cruel to things that insist on following you around). If one of the traps is of the fireball variety, be very careful about what else is in the room with you. The air of this level is filled with a strange smell. Only in the Caverns of Chaos; somewhere on the level the si can be found (always before Dwarftown). It sits on a trap, so kick it aside before picking it up (if possible). This level somehow seems to be removed from the rest of the world. Another unique level in the Caverns of Chaos. This is where kitty-karma catches up with you; the realm of the Master Cat. You go down the staircase...the stairs are very long!!! The theory is that the game was just taking too long to generate the level, and so Thomas had it make the excuse that the stairs were long, and so it was taking a while to get there. Nothing special has been noted about the level generated after one of these messages. You feel like you did something very stupid. This only occurs in the infinite dungeon, and only when the level you just left had an artifact on it that you left behind. It's gone the way of the level, although could be randomly generated again. The chaos level in the infinite dungeon This is a unique level in the infinite dungeon; it is very colorful and contains a Chaos artifact and its guardian. Once you leave the level, it and all of its contents will vanish and be unavailable for the duration of the game. Things you might hear/feel/sense while on a level Others interacting with the level You hear a grinding sound in the distance. Some monster just burrowed through the rock. You hear a strange "ZAP!". Someone stepped into a light trap (you while blinded or a monster on the level). You hear the sound of rushing water. Someone(thing) triggered a water trap. You hear a pained high-pitched screech in the distance. A monster was hit by a spear/arrow trap. You hear a painful bark in the distance. A monster was hit by a spear/arrow trap. You hear a painful hiss in the distance! A hissing monster was hit by a spear/arrow trap. You hear a thudding sound! Something just softened the fall of a stone block trap. You notice a slurping sound in the distance. A monster just excreted a web. You hear a ripping sound. Something just tore through a web. You hear the sound of toppling stones. Something just triggered the crumbling walls around some type of nest. You suddenly feel dizzy. Something just tried to teleport to your location, but got bounced away because you were in the way. Presumably the monsters get dizzy for a moment when you try to teleport to their location, too. Others interacting with themselves You hear a burping sound. A monster spawned another of its kind. You hear a popping sound. A monster duplicated itself (difference from spawning: the monsters hit points are temporarily halved). (Is this still accurate?) Beasts that just can't stay quiet You hear a distant "Hurumph!" There's a Dorn Beast on the level. You hear "Thumb" There's a creature so large it's very steps cause this reverberation (for native English folks--think of a resonant "thump" that keeps echoing). Probably a Titan. You hear a horrible unearthly wail in the distance! You're on the Banshee level. Don't listen too closely. You hear the clicking of many small feet! There's an ant hole on the level. You hear clicking sounds! An ant just crawled out of the ant hole. You hear an evil hissing and something large crawling about the ground!!! The Queen has left the ant hole. You hear buzzing sounds. There's a bee hive on the level, and another bee just left the hive. You interacting with the natives You sense strange vibrations. You killed a hive monster, and the level is trembling with the hive's fury. You getting a feel for the neighborhood You sense a certain tension. There's a monster pit (smaller than a nest--see level sounds--whose inhabitants are of typical strength for that level) on the level. You sense a pious aura. There's an altar on the level. You hear someone counting money. There's a shop on the level. You hear the clinking of coins. There's a shop on the level. You hear someone cursing shoplifters. There's a shop on the level. You hear the chime of a bell. There's a shop on the level. You hear splashing sounds. There's a pool on the level. You hear the wind howling. There's an old forge on the level. You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd! You're on the Arena level. The neighborhood getting a feel for you You sense imminent danger... An out-of-depth monster was created or the danger factor of the level has increased (read a scroll of peace to undo the latter), or perhaps both. You sense imminent danger...but the feeling passes. You got lucky and the roll to create/increase failed. But be warned, the roll for it will come again soon.
